Bill Klein notched a hole-in-one on the fifth hole during his round of golf before the tournament. He rode the momentum from that moment on as he won ARIA High Roller Event #17:$25,000 No-Limit Hold’em for $324,000 after defeating Seth Davies in heads-up action.
Event #17 saw a field of 36 entrants for a total prize pool of $900,000. Aaron Van Blarcum was the bubble boy after his ace-queen fell to the ace-nine of Klein when Klein made a flush on the turn. Other Notables to be eliminated before the money included Daniel Negreanu, Sam Soverel, Dan Smith, and Jason Koon.
Klein scored a massive double up just after the bubble burst when his ace-eight turn trips against Alex Foxen’s ace-queen gave Klein just under two million chips with five players remaining. Foxen was left shaking his head after the hand as he was left with just 155,000 in chips after holding the chip lead for most of the tournament.
Foxen had just eliminated Jake Schindler in sixth place to move back into the chip lead a few shuffles before the fateful hand with Klein. Foxen would eventually fall in fifth place after being eliminated by Ali Imsirovic.
The final four came down to Imsirovic, Klein, Davies, and Sean Winter, with Imsirovic holding the chip lead with 2.245 million just ahead of Klein.
Winter and Davies were nearly even in chips for most of the four-handed play, and when Winter ran his pocket queens into the pocket aces of Davies, he was left with the short stack of 200,000. Winter would find a double through Imsirovic to move back within striking distance with 460,000 in chips.
However, a few hands later, he hit the rail when Imsirovic turned a flush against Winter’s pocket kings, eliminating him from his second straight final table in fourth place.
Davies now found himself the short stack, but after two straight doubles through Imsirovic in blind-on-blind action, Davies moved into the chip lead, and Imsirovic was left with just 155,000 in chips. Imsirovic would hit the rail in 3rd place when shortly thereafter.
Heads-up action was a back and forth affair that saw neither man give an inch as they were near even in chips the majority of the match. Klein broke the stalemate when his ace-king suited out flopped the pocket threes of Davies to take a 3-1 advantage in chips.
